Counseling and Student Development Services

Most students will have stressful experiences in college no matter how bright or academically successful they are. The Student Counseling Center is a place where students can talk about problems and work on solutions. Students come to the Counseling Center to learn stress reduction skills, to find relief from symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to resolve conflicts with family, friends, and roommates. Over two hundred students visit the Counseling Center every year.

The Center offers short-term individual counseling to all students, free of charge. Other services provided by the Counseling Center include support groups, crisis intervention, and referrals to local psychiatrists. The Counseling Center also presents programs on such topics as stress, time management, body image, sexual assault, eating disorders and alcohol/drug use. The Counseling Center is open from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Please call 843-3128 for information or an individual appointment.

After hours crisis counseling is provided by Lakeside Hospital. This service is confidential and is available to any student who is experiencing an emotional crisis and needs to talk with a counselor. Students concerned about a friend′s safety are also encouraged to call. The service can be reached by calling 377-4733 and is available weekdays from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. as well as 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays.

Information Technology Services

Information Technology Services (ITS) is located in Barrett Library. Computer resources include network file storage, network printing, e-mail, computer labs, and computers located throughout campus.

Students are given network user accounts after enrolling. Computer accounts are for use in work related to the user’s role at Rhodes. Through a network user account, students have secure access to e-mail and network file storage. Students are responsible for all usage in their computer account.

Information Desk. Please refer ITS related questions or problems to the Information Desk at (901)843-3890 or by e-mail at helpdesk@rhodes.edu.

Printers. Laser printers are available throughout Barrett Library. Students are allocated $100.00 credit of free printing on August 1.  Printing is charged at a rate of $.10 per page for black and white and $.25 per page of color.  It is recommended that a photocopier be used if more than one copy of a documnent is required.

Network Services. The use of the network is a privilege, which may temporarily be revoked at any time for abusive conduct. Such conduct includes but is not limited to the placing of unlawful information on a system, the use of objectionable language, running unauthorized servers, and any other type of use that would cause congestion of the network or otherwise interfere with the work of others. It is a violation of the ITS policy to assume the identity of others in e-mail and other network communication.

Misuse of Computer Resources. The College assumes that individuals will treat all of the facilities with respect and consideration for other users. Computers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and for academic use only. If a problem is discovered with computer equipment, it should be reported immediately to the Information Desk. Under no circumstances should the user attempt to repair the equipment. Students are expected to abide by the rules of usage as posted in the labs.

ResNet. ResNet provides wireless connections in the residence halls to the network. Students are not to tamper with wireless access points. Damage to access points will result in fines being charged to students and/or to all of the students on the entire floor.

Misuse of Internet Resources. In keeping with Rhodes′ tradition of student self-governance, students are expected to use the network in ways consistent with codes of conduct established in the Honor Code and Social Regulations Code and with the Standards of the Rhodes community.

Violations. Violation of any portion of the Computer Usage Policies will result in suspension of one’s privileges for use of Rhodes computers and information technology services until the appropriate Vice President or Dean approves reauthorization of access to equipment and services, in addition to any other penalty that may be imposed under other College rules, such as the Honor Code or Social Regulations Code. Users must not conceal or help to conceal or “cover up” violations by any party. Users are expected to report any evidence of actual or suspected violation of these policies to the Vice President for Information Services.

Rhodes College is authorized to investigate alleged or apparent violations of College policy or applicable law using whatever means appropriate. Rhodes reserves the right to monitor use of Rhodes computers and to access, inspect and/or download any and all information stored on Rhodes computers in the course of such investigation. Information Services is authorized by the College to investigate policy violations and apply reduction or elimination of access privileges while the matter is under review and/or as a penalty for violations. These sanctions may apply to computing accounts, networks, College administered computing rooms, and other services or facilities. A College user accused of a violation will be notified of the charge and will have an opportunity to respond to the College disciplinary body appropriate to the violator’s status before a final determination of any penalty.

They will be asked to return their key to the mailroom when they graduate, transfer, or withdraw. Students that fail to return their key will be billed for a $15.00 fee.  Graduating students in December and May will return their mail key during the week of graduation.

First Class U. S. Postal Mail is forwarded to all students for one full year. Mail is forwarded to the address in the Rhodes BannerMart. The Registrar is the only office that can change a student’s official forwarding address.

Intra-campus Mail. All organizations who wish to place large volumes (30 pieces or more) may do so by notifying the mailroom and establishing a time to distribute their mail. To facilitate College business and campus-wide communication, an intra-campus/non-stamped mail service is provided for faculty and staff mail according to the following guidelines:

  • The correct name and department of the individual addressee must be clearly written on the outside of the mailing piece.
  • When sending information to students, please clearly write the name and box number on the outside of the mailing piece.
  • A listing is available with all student names and box numbers in Mail Services and is also included in the College directory.
  • Confidentiality is the responsibility of the sender and all mail should be placed in sealed envelopes or stapled.
  • Mailing pieces must measure at least 3” x 5”.
  • The sender, anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, should distribute multiple communications numbering 30 or more.

  • Those organizations or departments that regularly mail multiple communications through intra-campus mail are asked to schedule the distribution of their newsletter or communication pieces with Mail Services.
  • No money or items of value should ever be placed in the Intra-campus Mail System.

Services for Students with Disabilities

Rhodes is committed to ensuring that educational programs are accessible to all qualified students in accordance with the provisions of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and expanded by Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). To guard against discrimination on the basis of disability, reasonable and appropriate accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids are determined on a case-by-case basis for students who have a demonstrated need for these services.

It is the student’s responsibility to initiate any request for accommodation due to a qualifying disability. Prospective students with questions about special needs or accommodations should contact the Director of Admissions. Once enrolled, the Coordinator of Disability Services is the point of contact for students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities.

The Coordinator of Disability Services confers with students on an individual basis, then together with the Disability Support Committee, determines appropriate accommodations and identifies needed resources. Accommodations are designed to meet the student’s needs without fundamentally altering the nature of the College’s instructional programs. Since arrangements for reasonable accommodations may require several weeks of preparation, students who have been admitted to the College and who wish to request special services should contact the Student Disability Services Office as soon as possible after admission.

Students with disabilities who seek accommodations from Rhodes must present current and comprehensive documentation from a certified professional to the Coordinator of Disability Services. The Disability Support Committee will use this documentation as a guide to develop an appropriate and supportive plan for the student. Documentation requirements and additional information regarding services provided by the College to enrolled students with disabilities are available in the Student Disability Services Office and online at www.rhodes.edu/disability.

Student Heath Center and Insurance

The Moore Student Health Center is staffed with a nurse to advise or treat students with ordinary illnesses or minor injuries.  The college retains University of Tennessee Internal Medicine physicians to provide health care to students with more serious illnesses or for those requiring prescribed medication or testing.  The health center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM.  Physicians are available from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM by appointment.  Physician visits, laboratory testing or other fees relating to a physician appointment will be billed to the student′s health insurance by UTMG.  All co-pays, deductibles, and any fees not paid by insurance are the financial responsibility of the student.

When acute emotional disorders are brought to their attention, the College nurse or physician will refer the student to a College counselor or psychiatrist for an emergency evaluation. In the event of an emergency situation, the physician, the Dean of Students or the Dean’s designee may make a referral for an emergency psychiatric evaluation, including hospitalization. The parents will be notified as soon as possible and will assume responsibility for the student’s treatment.

A completed health record is required of all new or transfer students.  Rhodes College provides form for a medical history, physical examination, proof of health insurance and immunization history.  Required immunizations include: tetanus-diphtheria series, tetanus booster within the last ten years, two measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines, polio series, varicella vaccine or history of the disease, meningitis and hepatitis b vaccines.  International students are required to have a TB skin test.  Students will not be permitted to register for classes until this information is received by the Rhodes College Health Center.

The College requires all students to have a minimum of accident, sickness and hospitalization insurance coverage. Students may be covered under a family policy, a private carrier, or may enroll in an insurance policy negotiated by the College. Insurance coverage must continue as long as the student is enrolled.  It is the parent′s and student′s responsibility to verify with their insurance the availability of coverage for health care in the Memphis area.
