Closing

This month’s issue of Inside Rhodes is dedicated to providing information about Homecoming. We will return to our standard format in the next issue.

The Homecoming/Reunion Weekend presents a gift for us. It gives members of the Rhodes family the opportunity to visit with dear friends and classmates. It also provides opportunity for meeting members of a community where the members have far more in common than they have differences. Regardless of when you attended, you likely share a special bond that is grounded in your student experiences at this remarkable college. Use Homecoming as a means to both reconnect and to connect in celebrating that bond.

In his book The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness, Edward Hallowell writes about what he calls “the human moment”. I call your attention to the following passage:

The human moment – as opposed to the electronic moment – is any moment when you are engaged with other people, live and in person. Playing with a friend in the backyard is a human moment. Family dinner is a human moment. Talking in the car as you drive somewhere is a human moment. Reading aloud is a human moment. Human moments are far richer than electronic moments, because you get enormously more information in person than you can possibly get electronically. You get body language, tone of voice, facial expression, timing or words and sentences – none of which come across if you are not present personally.

My hope is that alumni will return in great numbers to celebrate human moments with classmates and friends in the Rhodes Community. If you have read very many issues of Inside Rhodes, you’ve come to realize that I use this vehicle as a way to try to create “electronic moments.” Often I write from the heart – particularly in the closing segments. That being said, there is a world of difference in the electronic and the human moments.

Please do your best to come home on October 20 and 21. We want to see all members of our alumni family.

Until next month, all best wishes from your Constituent Programs staff,

Bud Richey, Associate Vice President and Director of Alumni Relations
