Central High Senior Publishes Essay About Internship At Rhodes

Publication Date: 9/26/2007

Central High School senior Denzel Young has published an essay about his summer internship experience in MIFA’s Hope In Action magazine.

“My experience at Rhodes College as a Crossroads to Freedom intern has been a unique one that I will remember as long as I live,” wrote Young.  “From the college environment, alive with incoming freshmen and teachers moving around the campus, to the work, ranging from digitizing old documents to interviewing the common people of the [Civil Rights] era, this truly has been a summer unlike any other.”

Crossroads to Freedom (crossroadstofreedom.org) is a digital archive of materials that document the Civil Rights era in Memphis. The purpose of the archive is to promote and support conversations in the community about the impact of this historical era on Memphis today.

“This internship left me with some very unique experiences, such as interviewing important players in the Civil Rights Movement, as well as working and dining with authors and famed historians,” wrote Young. “This internship has been one to remember, and I am a wiser man for doing it. I now know more about editing images, videos, XML, and other crucial aspects of the technol¬ogy world.”

As a result of the internship, Young is considering Rhodes as a college choice.
