Buckman Fellowships for Study Abroad

The Robert Buckman Fellowships for Study Abroad are awarded to Rhodes students participating in a semester or year-long study abroad program. Preference is given to juniors or rising juniors. Award amounts will not exceed $12,500 per semester or $25,000 per academic year. Award monies may be used to pay for tuition, fees, transportation, and study-related living expenses. Costs incurred beyond the fellowship amount awarded are borne by the recipient.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Buckman Fellowships must:
1. Include a copy of your complete program application with your Buckman Fellowship application
2. Have demonstrated exemplary academic achievement at Rhodes
3. Agree to perform expected tasks as described

Application Instructions

Please observe the Fellowship Application deadlines. Late or incomplete applications may not be considered. A
complete Buckman Fellowship Application includes the following:
1. The appropriate Off-Campus Study Approval Form
2. $45 Application Fee (checks only, payable to Rhodes College)
3. Unofficial Academic Transcript (printed from Banner Web)
4. Statement of Responsibility and Assumption of Risk (for Rhodes programs and exchange programs)
5. Consortium Agreement for Financial Aid (for non-Rhodes Programs
6. Fellowship Application Form
7. Two (2) Fellowship Recommendation Forms
8. Fellowship Language Evaluation Form (if Applicable)
9. Supporting Materials regarding the parameters, academic integrity, and quality of your proposed program
10. Copy of your complete program application
11. Official Acceptance from your proposed program (if available)

Expectations for Buckman Fellows

1. Participate in Rhodes pre-departure orientation session(s) prior to studying abroad
2. Communicate regularly with your faculty advisor and the Buckman Center while abroad
3. Upon return to Rhodes:
• Present the Research Project or Creative Activity
• Attend re-entry sessions
• Complete Rhodes’ Study Abroad Evaluation
• Act as facilitators to pre-departure programs, as needed
• Assist with study abroad information sessions, as needed
• Assist incoming international students, as needed
• Support the enhancement of international education efforts and global awareness on campus
