Awards Recognizing Service and Scholarship Announced at Commencement

Annual awards were presented at the 158th Commencement Exercises of Rhodes College on May 12 in Fisher Garden on the Rhodes campus. Andrew Greer, Meredith Huddleston and Margaret Handwerker received the 2007 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards. The awards are presented annually to two graduating seniors (one male and one female) and one non-student who have given selflessly to others and the college.

Greer of Germantown, Tenn., graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and international studies. Huddleston of Atlanta, Ga., graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. She also completed honors research. Margaret Handwerker, an Administrative Assistant II in Academic Affairs, has served the college for 25 years under five academic deans.

The Distinguished Service Medal was bestowed upon Dr. Robert Waller, a Rhodes trustee and president emeritus of the Mayo Foundation. The award recognizes “able and selfless service to the college.” The medal expresses the appreciation of Rhodes and pays tribute to high ideals, commitment and hard work.

Sarah Lineback received the Peyton Nalle Rhodes Phi Beta Kappa Prize given to the graduating senior who exemplifies the highest qualities of scholarship, achievement, creativity and commitment to the liberal arts and sciences. Lineback of Greenville, S.C., graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in history. She also completed honors research.
