Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region, PPGMR, supports the national mission of Planned Parenthood to “advocate for access to birth control, education and medical services for everyone to ensure men, women and teens have the tools they need to plan their families.” Current student involvement at PPGMR ranges from volunteering at the clinic to assisting PPGMR professionals in HIV testing. The main way students become involved with PPGMR is through the Rhodes VOX Chapter, a student group which organizes events on campus to raise public awareness about reproductive health and rights, educate Rhodes students about sexual health, work with and support PPGMR.
“As for my personal experience, Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region has allowed me to connect my classroom learning of women’s issues with the fight for reproductive freedom in the south. I have also become more passionate about sex education in America and on campus. In the spring semester of my freshman year, I attended the VOX Summit in Nashville and learned a significant amount about ways to create sex health related programs on campus. PPGMR has been a great way for me to get involved in the Memphis community through volunteering to help with HIV testing and working the PPGMR booth at Cooper-Young Fest.” -- Jasmine Gilstrap, 2013
