"What′s with the red high tops on those graduates?"

"Oh, those are Bonner Scholars!"

It is a tradition of service-oriented students at Rhodes that is well recognized both within the Rhodes community and beyond. The idea of wearing red high top Converse sneakers at commencment emerged from a gift of mentor Mickey Babcock ’98.

As her parting gift upon her graduation, Mickey presented a group of service-minded students with a pair of red high top Converse shoes. She told them her personal motto which was to “Walk Loudly” in everything they do.

Mickey had worn "her happy shoes" almost everywhere she went and finally across the stage at her own commencement service.

Today the tradition has been embraced by many service groups including the Rhodes Bonner Scholars. The “Walk Loudly” slogan represents the philosophy of making a difference, confronting problems, and finding passion-- a philosophy central to the Bonner curriculum.
