Spain Maymester 2009
My name is Alice Havner and I am a sophomore Political Science major and Spanish minor. I studied in Bilbao, Spain during the summer of 2009 on the Spain Maymester- a Rhodes program. I stayed with a host family in Arangoiti. Arangoiti was a part of the city about a fifteen-minute walk from the University with a view of the entire Basque Country. Only Inés, my host mom, and I lived in the apartment so it was a great chance to practice my Spanish one-on-one with her. While in Spain, I also traveled to Vitoria- the capital of the Basque Country, Mundaka, Guernica, Segovia, and Madrid- Spain’s capital. I witnessed enthusiastic Spanish pride front row at a fútbol game. I enjoyed watching coverage of the Spanish general elections that took place during my stay. I tried different homemade, authentic, Basque dishes daily. Each event immersed me further and further into the culture. After returning from my study abroad experience, I decided to minor in Spanish. My goal is to incorporate my Spanish studies and knowledge into my future profession as a lawyer.
