Program Basics

Course Title: Biology 160: An International Experience in Health Care: Improving Infection Prevention and Control in El Salvador

Course Description: The program focuses on understanding the challenges that hospitals in developing countries face when it comes to hospital-acquired infections.  Students will receive basic training on elements of infection prevention and control in Memphis by St. Jude personnel before departing to El Salvador.  While in El Salvador, students will assist in performing a needs assessment survey at one of the public hospitals.  Students will also facilitate training of infection prevention and control by assisting in preparing a training session between the Ministry of Health and local nurses.  An excursion to El Imposible, an impressive national park 70 miles from the capital San Salvador, is included in the program.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum GPA: 2.50

  • Students must have completed Biology 131 and 141 with labs or Chemistry 112 with lab.

  • Spanish 101 is not required but preferred.
