Dr. Michael Nelson, the Fulmer Professor of Political Science at Rhodes, is the winner of the V.O. Key Award for Outstanding Book on Southern Politics. The award was presented January 9 by the Southern Political Science Association at its annual meeting in New Orleans.

Nelson’s book How the South Joined the Gambling Nation: The Politics of State Policy Innovation (Louisiana State University Press, 2007) explores how southern states have dealt with gambling-related public policy issues, especially whether to legalize casino gambling or create a state lottery. The co-author is John Mason ’92, formerly an assistant professor of political science at Rhodes.
