SIT in India, Nepal, Tibetan Studies, Nepal

- A semester in India focuses on examining development strategies and trends in a dynamic South Asian context. India is the world′s largest democracy--renowned for its exploding economy, vibrant IT industry, and burgeoning middle class--and poised to become an influential world power. Yet today traditional lifestyles and values are colliding with global aspirations as a large agrarian rural population intermingles with highly educated international urban Indians.
- A summer program in India studies Tibetan Buddhism. Spiti, Ladakh, and Zanskar are among the most remote and beautiful areas of Indic Asia. Despite their political inclusion within the modern state of India, these areas are considered to be within the Tibetan cultural sphere. However, unlike Tibet itself, Spiti and Ladakh are still culturally vibrant and relatively unspoiled by modern tourism or the imposition of foreign social norms. Many ancient Vajrayana Buddhist monasteries in the region provide awe-inspiring examples of the intricate religious systems of Western Himalayan Buddhism and its rich artistic institutions.

SIT Public Health and traditional Chinese medicine in China (summer)
From barefoot doctors to traditional remedies, the Chinese public health system has drawn increasing attention in the West. In this program, students have the unique opportunity to study traditional Chinese medicine and public health issues by working with professionals in the field in both urban and rural settings. Students will have the opportunity to observe traditional practioners of herbal medicine, acupuncture , and massage therapy, and, in some cases, receive practical training.
Based in the city of Kunming in Yunnan Province, China, and run in conjunction with the Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the program provides an introduction to the ancient philosophy, theory, history, and practices in traditional Chinese medicine, one of the world’s oldest, best-known, and most-developed medicinal systems, placing it in the social context of public health in China.
