SIT in Chile (economic development and social change)

Explore the political and social underpinnings of Chile’s export-oriented economy. The country’s fascinating history, distinct geography, natural resource diversity, political dynamics, and social realities have all shaped its economic development. Though often cited as a model economy of the South, Chile’s integration with the global economy has not been without painful adjustment and resistance. Lessons to be learned from Chile extend far beyond the nation’s borders. Based in the capital city of Santiago, students take field excursions to sites of local industry, forestry, mining, and nontraditional agricultural export production in northern and southern Chile. Opportunities to meet with union activists, policy analysts, government officials, and community organizers further develop understanding of the social, political, and environmental aspects of Chile’s economic system.

The University of Antwerp, Belgium

The University of Antwerp (UA) is characterised by its high standards in education, internationally competitive research and entrepreneurial approach. It was founded in 2003 after the merger of the three universities that were previously known as RUCA, UFSIA and UIA, the university′s roots go back to 1852. The University of Antwerp has approximately 11.000 students, which makes it the third largest university in Flanders. Over 1.000 of these students - exchange students not included - are from foreign countries, with a majority of EU countries. They offer exchange students classes in many subject areas, including applied economics and business.
