Selecting and Applying to a Program

Choosing a Program by Major

Browse through the list of majors to the right to find study abroad programs that cater especially to your major.  We also have these Major Advising Sheets (PDF) that have specific information on studying abroad in your major.

What Are Your Individual Priorities?

Deciding on a program has multiple variables, almost like choosing a college all over again!  Consider cost, time of year, course of study, as well as some of these questions when you are looking at different programs:

  • Which program or university offers the best courses in your specific major or combination of majors?
  • Which program model is a better fit for your learning style and course needs: classroom study, integrated study, field study, or internship?
  • Would you like a chance to do an independent study project?
  • Does the program include a home stay? If not, how will it connect you with members of the host society?
  • Do you need or want to improve language skills?

What is the List of Approved Programs?

Rhodes offers its students a list of quality programs which have been reviewed and approved by Rhodes faculty and staff for academic rigor and good student service.  This List of Approved Programs is composed of non-Rhodes programs; they are neither owned nor opperated by Rhodes.  Click to see the List of Approved Programs, which is also located at the top of this page, to the right.

Application Process

1. Meet with a Member of the Buckman Center Staff

Our Study Abroad Advisors and International Peer Advisors (iPAs) provide information to students from the beginning of the process through their return to Rhodes. Most students have multiple meetings through the stages of studying off-campus to find the program that best matches the individual student′s needs.

2. Select a Program

You must select a program which supports and extends your Rhodes academic program, particularly your major or combination of major(s), minor(s) and degree requirements. Select a Rhodes program, or a non-Rhodes program on our List of Approved Programs.  While you are reviewing programs, remember to investigate the programs’ admission criteria and ensure that you meet the applicable eligibility requirements.

3. Complete and Submit an Off-Campus Study Application

You must submit a complete Off-Campus Study Application by the appropriate deadline and be approved to study off-campus by the Director of International Programs. See the Downloadable Forms page for the "Instructions and Checklists" document and application deadlines.

4. Apply Separately to Your Program Sponsor or Host University

You must submit a separate application to, and be accepted by, the program listed in your Off Campus Study Application. DO NOT WAIT until you have been approvd to study off-campus to complete this step!

5. Acceptance Details

Once a student is accepted to study off -campus on either a Rhodes or a non-Rhodes program, the Buckman Center for International Education will send an electronic acceptance letter that includes this web-based Study Abroad Guide.
