Rhodes Parent Talks About the Value of a Liberal Arts Education
Publication Date: 10/21/2008
Dr. Peter Agre, recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was a speaker at this year’s Rhodes Parent and Family Weekend. He is Professor and Director of the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute and father of Carly Agre, Class of 2011.
In the following excerpt from his presentation, he shares one of his challenges as a young scientist. “Deep down in every scientist is a ‘blow up’ in the lab story,” says Agre. But, he adds, a liberal arts education is multidimensional enough to allow individuals to find solutions to problems.
In the excerpt, he also gives an entertaining rendition of the Periodic Table in song.
