Rhodes Senior to Become Officer in the Army

John Hurd, a senior religious studies major from Kennesaw, Ga., will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army at a ceremony on May 2. The ceremony will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre on The University of Memphis campus. 

Rhodes, in cooperation with The University of Memphis and the Departments of the Army and Air Force, participates in cross-town agreements that provide the opportunity for Rhodes students to enroll in ROTC. The student who participates in the ROTC program has to complete all requirements as specified by the military service departments, including summer training camps, in order for commissioning to be granted. As a Second Lieutenant, Hurd will be assigned to the Adjutant General Corps.

Hurd, the son of Marian and John Hurd, will attend his Infantry Officer Basic Course (IOBC) this summer at Ft. Benning in Columbus, Ga., and will be stationed in Ft. Stewart, Ga., beginning  December 22, 2008.

At Rhodes, Hurd is a member of the Theta Alpha Kappa religious honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa honor society for campus leadership, and the varsity football team.  He also is a Resident Assistant on campus, a volunteer at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and has been involved with several Rhodes Football food drives.
