Painting by Alex Carter ’09 Accepted Into International Art Show
Publication Date: 3/18/2008
"Consume," a painting by junior art major Alex Carter, was recently accepted into the 22nd International Juried Show at the Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit, NJ. The show runs until March 21, 2008.
“Consume” fuses images of the female form in pop culture (from fashion photography, advertising, and television) with various objects of consumption (scissors, needles, and forks). According to Carter, these images, when layered and presented together, reveal the violent and sexualized way in which females are represented in contemporary society.
Carter’s piece was one of 140 works in the show, juried by Carter Foster, curator of drawings at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
According to the show’s Web site, the Arts Center received more than 2,300 entries ranging in mediums (painting, sculpture, mixed media, watercolor, and photography). In addition to submissions from every area of the U.S., entries were received from Germany, Poland, Mexico, Romania, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Armenia, China, Israel, Denmark, Turkey, France, Japan, England, and India.
