Professor Nollan Heads Rachmaninoff Collection Board’s Linguistic Division
Publication Date: 1/31/2008
Rachmaninoff scholar Valeria Z. Nollan, the L. Palmer Brown Chair of Interdisciplinary Humanities and associate professor of Russian at Rhodes, has been named head of the Linguistic Division of the editorial board of the Critical Edition of the Complete Collected Works of S.V. Rachmaninoff, the first authoritative, scholarly collected works of the Russian composer’s music.
She is the only U.S. scholar on the board, whose other members hail from Germany, England, Scotland and Russia. As head of the Linguistic Division, she oversees the work of some 40 scholars working in several languages. Thanks in large part to her knowledge of foreign languages (Russian, German, French, Ukrainian and English), nothing written or translated into English will be published until she has reviewed and approved it.
The collection is being produced in Moscow by a core scholarly team led by Valentin Antipov, with publication details handled by Russian Music Publishing. Exclusive worldwide distribution rights are held by Bärenreiter Publishers in Kassel, Germany.
In fall 2007, Prof. Nollan’s travels took her to Moscow to work with the board on the finishing touches of the latest volumes of the collected works. In 2006, she traveled to Frankfurt, where she met with Douglass Woodfull-Harris, the music editor of Bärenreiter, to coordinate details of the collection’s international distribution. Her travel has been funded by her endowed chair stipend at Rhodes.
