Rhodes seniors Alexander Liu and Marcus Falion along with FedEx employees, representatives from United Housing and A New Beginning Community organizations, and apartment residents recently renovated 20 units of “A New Place Apartments” in the Hollywood-Springdale neighborhood.
Liu and Falion are community development interns (funding provided by the City of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development) who coordinated the effort. More than 150 FedEx employees worked as volunteer teams to improve the interiors and exteriors of the apartments and to build a playground and a basketball goal.
Once fully completed, the 60-unit complex will provide clean, safe, and drug-free housing at an affordable price. Dr. Michael Kirby, Plough Professor of Urban Studies at Rhodes, believes the apartment’s renovation will also rejuvenate local schools and businesses.
